How much gold does a full Sovereign contain?
A full gold Sovereign contains approximately 7.32 grams of fine gold, equivalent to 0.235 troy ounces. Its total weight is approximately 7.99 grams because it is struck in 22-carat gold. Smaller Sovereign denominations contain less gold, so check the denomination and specifications of the coin you are purchasing.
Are gold Sovereign coins exempt from Capital Gains Tax?
Under UK rules, Sovereigns minted from 1837 onwards are exempt from Capital Gains Tax because they are sterling currency. Earlier Sovereigns are treated differently. This makes the coin’s date relevant when considering its tax status, particularly if you are purchasing an older issue for a collection.
Will I pay VAT on gold Sovereigns?
Gold Sovereigns that qualify as investment gold are exempt from UK VAT. This is separate from their Capital Gains Tax treatment. Can I choose a Sovereign from a particular year?
